After turning around balance sheets during their stint in financial companies, Ajith Kamath, CMD, Arch Pharma Labs and his contemprories decided to turnaround and restructure a sick unit registered under bifr.. The unit (Merven drug products) located near hyderabad with excellent infrastructure faced Marketing & Finance related issues, which led to it turning sick. Kamath thought that the company had tremendous potential. In 1999, under the name of Arch Pharma Labs , he started off with contract manufacturing in the unit by extending marketing & working capital support and ended up with a major export order of around Rs 5 crores within the first three months itself. In the first year itself arch pharma could penetrate into the European and Latin American pharma markets and had among its customers, prominent multinational pharmaceutical companies.
Thereafter with private equity coming in, arch pharma saw a sharp upward growth curve. Today, it's the world leader in Pharma subsidiary Isoxazole side -chains. With 6 manufacturing units across country and R&D lab near Mumbai, company’s turnover last year crossed Rs 352 crores and is expected to cross its target of Rs 500 crores by march 2008.
While the promoters have already diluted the stake to 35% , Arch Pharma may look at going public by next year.
